So, a calico tabby cat may have the distinct tricolor pattern of calicos in addition to tabby stripes and spots. The mackerel pattern and its Tm allele at the tabby gene locus is dominant over the classic (or blotched) allele, Tb. However, the agouti gene primarily controls the production of black pigment, so a cat with an O allele for orange color will still express the tabby pattern. There are four tabby coat patterns; classic, mackerel, spotted, ticked.

In addition, a fifth tabby pattern is always present in tortoiseshell, patched tabby (torbie), caliby and calico coats. Though there are several distinct tabby patterns, most tabbies exhibit some degree of striping on their coats. In a study published this week in Nature Communications, scientists report that the genes that set up the tabby pattern are activated in an embryo’s skin cells before the cat’s fur develops. The early skin cells even mimic tabby stripes under the microscope, a discovery never seen before in embryonic cells. They resemble tortoiseshell, a colorful material used in manufacturing, and have been nicknamed Torti Tabbies, or Torbies. Also known as blotched tabby or marbled tabby, the classic tabby consists of clearly defined markings, on a lighter background. The darker markings can consist of lines, swirls, and whorls which are unbroken on the top of the cat and swirled along the sides, with a distinctive mark on each side that resembles a bullseye.

Unfortunately, determining your cat’s breed can be difficult if you adopted the cat from a shelter or as a stray. One way to learn more about your cat’s genetics is to use the Basepaws cat DNA test. Since many different types of cats can represent the tabby cat, there’s a wide variety of health conditions a tabby cat may develop throughout its lifetime. On average, cats should receive 30–45 minutes of daily exercise provided by their owners. This can include play sessions with cat toys or using enrichment toys for mental stimulation.
The dominant A expresses the underlying tabby pattern, while the recessive non-agouti or "hyper-melanistic" allele, a, does not. Solid-color (black or blue) cats have the aa combination, hiding the tabby pattern, although sometimes a suggestion of the underlying pattern can be seen ("ghost striping"). Interestingly, orange tabby cats are usually male, with only about percent of them being female. As with tigers and their stripes or cheetahs and their spots, domestic tabby cats, too, are known for their distinct coat patterns. And so (even without the clear tabby markings), most domestic shorthair cats will have some form of tabby within them. A ticked tabby cat does not have the traditional stripes or spots on their body, and may not, at first, seem to be a tabby. However, like all tabbies, this coat pattern has tabby markings on the face and agouti hairs on the body.
Tabby is not an actual, recognized breed but rather, a category of cats with unique markings on their coats. You’ll often see a characteristic “M” on the forehead, right above the eyes. A tabby pattern can be found across a wide range of purebred cats and in mixed breeds. The most familiar tabby coats are black, but some variations in the pigment result in brown, orange, and gray tabbies.
Genetically all cats are tabby, however, many possess modifier genes that inhibit this pattern from being expressed. The mackerel tabby (Mc) is the default (wild type) pattern, with the classic pattern being recessive (mc). Recessive genes require two copies (one from each parent) to be expressed. The spotted tabby is essentially a mackerel tabby with a modifier gene that breaks up the markings from stripes into spots. Tabby cats are not actually a specific breed but rather a description of their characteristic markings.
Bear especially has it out for her boyfriend and has been known to land a punch or two with his paws. A spotted Tabby has the striped face of a Classic Tabby but has oval or round spots along their bodies. Ocicats and American Bobtails are good examples of Spotted Tabbies.
